In the mid-19th Century, Brooklyn was becoming a major American city in its own right, as manufacturing overtook the city’s agricultural heritage – and as the concentration of enslavement in Brooklyn gave way to a growing abolitionist fervor.

Frederick Douglass made 10 speaking appearances in Brooklyn, part of an abolitionist network featuring such luminaries as James McCune Smith and Henry Ward Beecher and featuring stops on the Underground Railroad. This tour stops at several key sites of the movement, at many of which Douglass spoke, and provides an opportunity to hear his words where they were spoken.
